December 18- February 19, 2008 Exploring Deep Ecology: An eight week discussion course created by the Northwest Earth Institute

We meet from 6-8 PM on Tuesday evenings beginning December 18, with a two week break for the holidays, resuming on January 8, 2008.

Where: The Small UUCNWT RE room at 3601 W Cromwell Dr, Tucson, Arizona.

Deep ecology describes an approach in which humans reflect deeply on their relationship with the earth and the interconnectedness of everything on it. It emphasizes the intrinsic value of all species and sees humans as one part of an interdependent ecosystem. It questions the world view that humans should have dominance over nature, use the natural environment as an unending resource, and promote consumerism while denying the need to protect the earth's resources and biological diversity. It empahsizes our spiritual connection to the natural world.

Some of the topics we will address in the coming weeks include:

  • Wild nature- our personal connection to the natural world
  • Native American wisdom - how native Americans see themselves in relation to the rest of life
  • The Gaia hypothesis - understanding the scientific basis for the concept that earth operates like a living organism

If you need any more information about this, contact Marion E.  We can add participants until after the second meeting.

January 6 – March 2, 2008 Voluntary Simplicity Dicussion Circle

What: A group of about 10 people getting together to dicuss how they can reduce their impact on the environment in their personal lives. When we realize that the things we do all have an impact on the natural world and the peoples of this earth we want to make changes in our lives. What changes each individual wants to make is a personal choice. It may be no longer consuming animal based food, buying less stuff, investing in environmentally responsible companies, using the car less and many other choices.

Why: As we all know, changing habits can be a challenge. This group is meant to help us realize where we can make a change and to then help us implement this new habit for good.

Discussions are based on the book “Discussion Course on Voluntary Simplicity” by the Northwest Earth Institute.

When and where: The group will meet for 8 weeks (January 6 – March 2, with no meeting on February 24), on Sunday mornings from 9:00-10:30  AM in the large RE room at UUCNWT at 3601 W Cromwell Dr, Tucson, Arizona.

Cost: $ 20 for the book (scholarships available).

Childcare: Provided if requested in advance.
