Reaching out to the larger community,UUCNWT has chosen participate with the Friends of Ironwood Forest (FIF) to help preserve this invaluable part of our Sonoran Environment.
The Ironwood National Forest Monument was established by presidential proclamation in June 2000. Friends of Ironwood Forest was established in November 2006 to work to protect the biological, geological, archaeological, and historical resources and values for which the Ironwood Forest National Monument was established. Its members include representatives of the Sierra Club and the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection. They work with other groups and schools to meet this mission.
The monument is a 129,000 acre site encompassing Silver Bell, Waterman and Sawtooth mountains. Access is from Avra Valley or Silver Bell Roads. Terrain is rough and no facilities are provided, but it offers many opportunities for viewing wildlife and there are several cultural and historical sites. Help is needed to keep out intrusive development and maintain the trails.
